In the landscape that consists of American poetry and the foreign verse available in translation, the originality and independence of Alfredo de Palchi have long been conspicuous. Giuseppe Panella – The Poetry of Alfredo de Palchi An Interview and Three Essays

Consisting of an interview and three essays, Giuseppe Panella’s book off ers several new insights into the poetry of Alfredo de Palchi. It is the fi rst monograph ever devoted to this major Italian poet. Delving into de Palchi’s themes of suff ering, death, eroticism, birth, rebirth, the will to live, and Nature (captured in its most primordial aspects), Panella develops a critical vantage point which, while taking into account salient biographical details—notably de Palchi’s unjust incarceration at the end of the Second World War—, does not exclusively focus on them as many past critics have done. Most importantly, Panella examines the poet’s original use of language and its evocation of “the chaos of the pre-conscious mind.” Examining all of de Palchi’s published poetry to date, this critical appraisal appears at the same time as a vast selection in translation, Paradigm: Selected and New Poems 1947-2009. GIUSEPPE PANELLA was born in Benevento, Italy, in 1955. He studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, where he now teaches. His main academic interests concern the concept of the Sublime (on which he has written two books: Il Sublime e la prosa: Nove proposte di analisi letteraria, Florence: Clinamen, 2005 and Storia del Sublime, Florence: Clinamen, 2012). As a poet, he has published eight books of poems and one of them, Il terzo amante di Lucrezia Buti (Florence: Polistampa, 2000) won the Golden Florin—Florence Prize for 2001. JEREMY ALDEN was born in Boston in 1988. He is a direct descendent of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. After writing his master’s thesis on the hidden autobiographical elements in Longfellow’s narrative poem,  e Courtship of Miles Standish, he moved to Florence, Italy, in 2009. He is now completing a doctoral thesis comparing Dante’s and Longfellow’s conceptions of physical and spiritual love.  is is his fi rst translation.
